Representation Matters: A Discussion On Women Political Leaders

Overview

Friday, April 19, 2024

9:30-11:30am EST

On the occasion of the World Bank's spring meetings, we are delighted to announce the official launch of the collaboration between the World Bank, Women Political Leaders, and the Oliver Wyman Forum on the important topic of "Representation Matters." This program aims to provide data-driven evidence that a higher number of women in politics and political leadership is closely linked to greater legal equality between women and men. To achieve this, we will heavily leverage the Women, Business and the Law (WBL) data and analysis.

For our inaugural event, we will bring together esteemed senior policymakers and executives to explore the profound impact of representation and how women shape and in fact improve policy outcomes.

Our initial report in 2023 demonstrates that countries experience overall progress and improved performance when they have significant representation of women in political leadership. Increased representation of women often leads to the implementation of more laws that ensure equality and greater participation of women in the workforce.

Our goal is to facilitate an exchange of perspectives on the remarkable contributions women political leaders have already made and how we can further promote representation, particularly in the super election year of 2024.
